HAH803P Physics and Wave Propagation (4 ECTS)

Overview

Description:

This TU an overview of waves. The following topics will be covered in this course:

Different types of waves: Electromagnetic, acoustic, and ultrasonic waves… Dispersion relations, energy transport, interference.  Wave equations. Propagation of plane and spherical waves. Interfaces: continuity conditions, reflection, transmission, parallel-plate waveguide, layered media. Surface waves. Diffraction: Fresnel and Fraunhofer approximations, near field, far field. Elastic and inelastic scattering. Spatial and temporal coherence.

Propagation in heterogeneous media: types of media heterogeneity. Single and multiple scattering. Acoustics of simple and complex media. Effects of viscoelasticity on ultrasound. Applications in the biomedical field.

Objectives:

Understand how electromagnetic and ultrasonic waves interact with matter, such as the human body.
