HAH803P Physics and Wave Propagation (4 ECTS)
Overview
Description:
This TU an overview of waves. This course will cover the following topics:
Different types of waves: Electromagnetic, acoustic, and ultrasonic waves… Dispersion relations, energy transport, and interference. Wave equations. Propagation of plane and spherical waves. Interfaces: continuity conditions, reflection, transmission, parallel-faced plates, layered media. Surface waves. Diffraction: Fresnel and Fraunhofer approximations, near field, far field. Elastic and inelastic scattering. Spatial and temporal coherence.
Propagation in heterogeneous media: types of media heterogeneity. Single and multiple scattering. Acoustics of simple and complex media. Effects of viscoelasticity on ultrasound. Applications in the biomedical field.
Objectives:
Understand how electromagnetic and ultrasonic waves interact with matter and, for example, the human body.
