HAH803P Wave physics and propagation (4 ECTS)

Presentation

Description :

This TU provides an overview of waves. This course will cover :

Different types of waves: electromagnetic, acoustic and ultrasonic waves... Dispersion relations, energy transport, interference. Wave equations. Propagation of plane and spherical waves. Interfaces: continuity conditions, reflection, transmission, face-parallel plates, stratified media. Surface waves. Diffraction: Fresnel and Fraunhoffer approximations, near field, far field. Elastic and inelastic scattering. Spatial and temporal coherence.

Propagation in heterogeneous media: types of media heterogeneity. Single and multiple scattering. Acoustics of simple and complex media. Effects of viscoelasticity on ultrasound. Biomedical applications.

Objectives :

Master the interactions of electromagnetic and ultrasonic waves with matter, such as the human body.
